How to Care for a Tattoo? Standard Healing Process
The bandage applied by the tattoo artist should be removed after 2-4 hours.
Next, wash the tattoo gently with soap under running water. You can use antibacterial soap, baby soap, or plain soap without additives. It’s important to thoroughly wash off all the fluids from the tattoo. Never rub the tattoo or use sponges for washing.
After washing, pat dry with a paper towel or napkin and let it breathe for a moment.
Apply a healing cream or a special tattoo healing product.
All necessary healing products are available for purchase at our studio.
- Then, cover the tattoo with a medical dressing (available at pharmacies) and secure it with paper tape.
- Repeat the washing, moisturizing, and changing of the bandage every 4-6 hours.
- If you have any questions, consult with your tattoo artist or our studio—we are always happy to help.
The first 4 days are crucial for the healing process. The more often and carefully you wash the tattoo, the better it will heal and retain its color.
On the 4th or 5th day, the dry skin will start peeling. The skin will come off in thin layers, similar to a sunburn. At this stage, frequent washing is no longer necessary, but you must avoid letting the skin dry out. Regular moisturizing remains very important.
Ensure the tattoo is not damaged by clothing or through mechanical means. With proper care, the tattoo should heal within a week to a week and a half without needing touch-ups.
Healing Film
A very popular and convenient method of healing tattoos.
It helps you forget about constant washing and bandaging.
After the procedure, the tattoo artist will apply a healing film to the fresh tattoo, which should be removed after 4-5 days under warm water.
After removing the film, apply cream to the tattoo 3-4 times a day to prevent dry skin from forming.
What NOT to do:
- Do not scratch off the dry skin;
- Avoid experimenting with the healing process. Just because a friend healed fine without cream doesn’t mean it’s a rule. Follow your tattoo artist’s instructions carefully, and if you have any questions, contact them or the studio;
- Do not use gauze or any fabric bandages. Tattoos release various fluids, which the medical dressing absorbs. Any other material will simply stick to the fresh tattoo. If no other option is available, you can wrap the tattoo in plastic wrap, but change it every 1.5-2 hours;
- Avoid alcohol consumption;
- Refrain from exercising. Sweat is not beneficial for the tattoo;
- Avoid bathing in hot water for 2-4 weeks;
- For a month, avoid swimming pools and open bodies of water;
- Limit visits to tanning salons for a month. Afterward, remember that sunlight negatively affects tattoo pigment. To prevent fading in the summer, we recommend using sunscreen with SPF 50+;
Special sunscreens are available for purchase at our studio.
Remember to show your tattoo artist the final result after healing. After 2-3 weeks, when the skin has fully regenerated, they will be able to determine whether a touch-up is needed. Typically, for small tattoos and with proper care, touch-ups are not necessary.
If you have any questions, contact the studio or the person who performed the procedure.
